Rogue One: A Star Wars Story; MOVIE REVIEW

To say this movie is ‘good’ would be an understatement.

It is amazing.

And I was really surprised at the depth of emotion this storyline explored. It had great character development and believable struggles.

Buuuuuut, before I start raving on and on, lemme just explain something to you.

I love Star Wars.

Like, I love Star Wars. You know that Tusken Raider that jumps around in Episode 4? That’s me.

Besides that, I’m a fan of the movies. I own all of the originals (originals and prequels), and I’ve seen them dozens of times.

So, naturally, I felt extremely angry at the idea of trying to go back in time (again) and make a side story.

I never thought I was going to see this movie, so I had all my friends tell me what happened in the end. So, yeah. The ending was a bit spoiled for me.

The spoilers made me watch the movie with an even lower expectation.

I was pleasantly surprised.

Because I’m an amazing blogger and not at all disorganized, I’m going to list everything under BULLET POINTS!!! TITLES!!!! BIG BOLD WORDS THAT WILL MAKE YOU JUMP AND WIGGLE IN ANTICIPATION!!!!

Here it goes.

(yeah, not that bold)

The characters were interesting and mysterious. I like mysterious characters (like BATMAN), so Jyn and Cassian were both big hits for me. Anyway.

Troubled back story, emotional trauma, and ‘what is my purpose’ issues. All the things that make a great character.

She fascinated me. They did a great job of not making her like Katniss (aka tough girl who falls in love too quickly), or like the girl from Enchanted (aka air-headed ginger who sings creepily and talks to animals.)

She was right in the middle. Yes, she could fight and take care of herself, but she also had a heart and she was emotional and she felt pain.

(and she didn’t talk to animals which was a huge plus)

And it wasn’t ‘all the sudden fall down and weep uncontrollably about beloved Peeta’ kinda emotional. There was a reason why she was kinda messed up. Jyn had a troubled past, and her home life left some things to be desired.

I’m not spoiling anything for anyone, but I have to say that she was my favorite character. Beautiful character arc and great revealing of her back story, in my opinion. Five stars.

First of all, HE WAS SO COOL!!!!

Like, he was so cool.

You never really find out much about him, but the things you do find out about him makes him even more mysterious and interesting.

He also seems to have a troubled background and a ‘what is my purpose’ issue.

As I said before, those things make up a great character, but only if they are used correctly.

Hands down, they nailed him.

(Not actually nailed cause… ouch)

He was perfect. And like, he just looks really cool??!!!! And mysterious??!! Idk.

Maybe it’s the jacket.

But his character was really well-done, had great development, and managed to be an almost-main-character without stealing the spotlight.

They were totally trying to recreate a C-3PO. It was poorly disguised attempt in a darker and taller robot.

Buuuut. Even though you could tell that they were trying to bring back the robot sidekick, you have to admit that they succeeded.

K-2SO is hilarious. He is me. Like everything he said, I probably would have said. Well, maybe not, considering a lot of what he said was super smart (and that’s not exactly me). but close enough.

He was a great side character and added that comic relief that more serious dramas really need. He was like a breath of fresh air.

Only, he was metal, so… You can’t exactly breathe him in.

I loved him so much, he was almost my favorite character.

As a bad guy, he was pretty cool.

…Except… every time I saw him I thought of:

“Do you feel in control?”

“I’ve paid you a small fortune”

“And this gives you power over me?”…

If anyone can tell me what that’s from, I’ll give them a gold star.

So, you never really know anything about Krennic, except that Jyn’s father and him appear to go waaaay back. How far back, I don’t know. Maybe behind that chair over there… Hahah

He was cool, and I found him to be pretty believable.

Chirrut and Baze.

Great side characters.

The only thing that bothered me is that Chirrut is not a Jedi. He’s, like, super powerful and seems even stronger than Obi-Wan or Mace Windu or whomever! He literally is blind, but can fight without looking.

And he’s not a Jedi? Why didn’t he just turn his staff into a lightsaber? Like, duh…?

If any of you have seen the HISHE version of Rogue One, you know what I’m talking about. XD

Baze was kinda cool. His gun was awesome.

They weren’t my favorite characters ever, but they pass.

He was great. I love his character so much.

He was funny, smart, kinda twitchy, and overall cool.

I’m hurrying this up because it’s 10 p.m. here and I want to watch Captain America.

Galen, Darth Vader and Saw were just okay.

Ha Ha Ha.

Just kidding.  DARTH VADER WAS AMAZING!!!!

Galen was pretty amazing too.

And Saw just rubbed me the wrong way. I wanted to just shake him around and tell him to wake up AND GET A LIFE!

Great plot, great intensity, and above all, great character exchange.

There was a ton of development and there were no slow or unnecessary scenes. I loved it all. And even though the conflict was extremely ordinary, there were twists and unexpected scenes that really kept the movie alive.

Plus, the graphics were incredible and just amazing.

What I loved about this movie were the innuendos and suggestions pointing back to the original Star War films.

And each character played a part. The plot moved quickly and centered around their emotional turmoil/growth.

Good stuff.

Just wow. All the actors and actresses did an amazing job. Highfive to them all, they deserve awards.

There were no scenes where I started thinking about what the actress or actor may have been thinking when they acted it. That’s how good it was.

If you can keep me from thinking about the actual actor/actress, then you’ve done a great job.

If you have not seen Rogue One, I suggest you watch it as soon as possible (NOW!) and you will see why you shouldn’t have waited.

I can’t recommend this movie enough. It’s overall decently clean, nothing to worry about, and it’s just really well made.

Even if you haven’t seen the original Star Wars, this movie is something the whole family can enjoy.

Check it out, and if you don’t know where to find it, look on Google Play, iTunes, or Amazon Instant Video.

It’s on there. So do it now.

Respond in the comments and tell me what you thought of the movie!!!

  1. I agree! I really enjoy the depth of this movie!! I hate the ending, but I adore the characters!! Especially Cassian. He puts a very different perspective on the Resistance. Also, good job with your review! I really enjoyed it 😀 (I respect people who can write reviews, because I am terrible at it myself.)
